Indonesian/Nat Hundreds of school teachers have protested in East Timor, demanding the government protect them and find them safer jobs, after claiming to have been attacked by their students. Thousands of teachers migrated to the territory, enticed by the government's promise of better pay - despite the bitter conflict that has prevailed ever since Indonesia's invasion of the territory in 1975. Indonesia has offered to grant independence to East Timor if its people reject an autonomy offer that will be completed by the end of April. Five hundred elementary and secondary school teachers in East Timor's capital Dili demanded that the government protect them. The teachers held a rally outside the state education office. Indonesia invaded the former Portuguese colony in 1975...

The lush green mountains and rich, fertile soil of Maubisse in Timor Leste is perfect for growing vegetables. Constrained by old-fashioned farming practices though, Maubisse's farmers would be lucky to bring in US$100 per year. Now they are making that same amount in a week with a new focus on going organic and new farming techniques. The changes happened with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Aware of the hardship the vegetable farmers were experiencing, the ILO built a partnership with the Government-run Institute for Business Support (IADE) and initiated the Business Opportunities and Support Services (BOSS) project. Building a nation-state "out of the ashes of destruction is not easy," but the President of Timor-Leste (formerly East Timor), José Ramos-Horta, says his country will seek to become a viable nation by eliminating unemployment in the next two to three years by creating new jobs from its investments in infrastructure projects.
In this three-minute video presentation, Nick Beams points out that the Socialist Equality Party is the only party contesting the upcoming federal election to consistently oppose Australia's military-police interventions in East Timor, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and other South Pacific countries.
Bayu-Undan lies in the Timor Sea, 500km offshore of Darwin and 250km south of East Timor. The fields are located on 160km² in 80m of water. The operator is ConocoPhilips, which has a 56.27% stake, its partners being Eni (12.04%), Santos (10.64%), Inpex (10.53%) and Tokyo Electric Power and Tokyo Gas (10.08% each). Discovery Bayu was discovered in early 1995, when the Bayu-1 well intersected a 155m gas/condensate column, at a depth of 897m. This tested 2.54m³/day of gas and 5,250bbl of condensate. The follow-up well, Bayu-2, tested 991,000m³/day of gas and 2,000bbl of condensate from a 52m interval. In July 1995, Undan was discovered 10km north-west of Bayu, where a 139m gross hydrocarbon column tested 1.6 million m³/day of gas and 3,900bbl condensate/day. The total recoverable...

Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Soaring unemployment in East Timor, one of Asia's poorest countries, has raised concerns that violence could return to the streets if the restlessness among the country's youths continues. With about 80 per cent of young Timorese leaving school without any job in sight, most have given up hope except to leave their shores for greener pastures. Hannah Belcher reports. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. Eng/Portu/Nat U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan left East Timor on Friday for Australia after spending an emotional 24 hours in the devastated former Indonesian province. He told a crowd of more than 5-thousand people in the capital Dili that he was taken aback by the level of destruction inflicted by pro-Indonesian militias. East Timor was destroyed after its people voted for independence in a UN-sponsored referendum on August 30 last year. A traditional East Timorese welcome for the U-N Secretary General, Kofi Annan in Dili, East Timor. The communications officer for CARE Canada, Anne Larrass travelled to Indonesia and East Timor with former MuchMusic VJ Hannah Sung to produce three educational documentaries about the youth in Indonesia as they rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami and the 2006 earthquake; and youth in East Timor who faced uncertainty in a country striving to stop the violent civil conflict that has affected an entire generation. How to spend 24-hours in Dili, capital of one of the newest countries in the world. After a short hop aboard Nam Air from Bali, I land in sleepy Dili. The Hotel Timor is a good base to explore the city on foot, where I see the Presidential Palace, the Santa Cruz Massacre Memorial, the port area and a church. I see lots of great statues along the way, too. Then I catch a taxi to the Christ monument, and make it to the top to admire the view. After a brief stop by Dili Lighthouse, I end my day in Timor Plaza, where I enjoy a cooling beer in a rooftop restaurant.
Our school runs an amazing trip to East Timor every two years, helping out at schools and road-tripping around Ermera. I was lucky enough to go along this year, and the whole trip was just incredible. It was 8 days of our lives that all 12 of us will never forget. This video is the first of many videos I will make for the trip. P.S - I'm absolutely spewing because 120 of the GoPro video's corrupted, and some were absolute gold that I was planning on using. None the less, I still have enough a fair few videos to work with. Btw at the end it's meant to say 'special thanks to our amazing team' but i forgot about that when cropping the video, so that's why it looks weird. Equipment: Google Pixel GoPro Hero 4 Session And I'm spewing I didn't bring my SLR. Tune: (I know its pretty annoying,...

So this was the long awaited end of my Motorbike South Coast Tour. A great reward for this crazy exhausting but unforgettable trip. The island is tiny and cute but the road from Tutuala to the beach with boats is the worst in Timor. Only 4WD cars can pass. My motorbike withstood the challenge and took me up and down that ugly trail. I am not the biggest fan of desert islands because they are all the same and I've seen quite a few of them. I find them all quite boring for a long stay because there is nothing to do but swim and fish. I tried to hike across Jaco but there are no trails and I quickly got lost and panicked which forced me to turn back. I snorkelled for about 2 hours and went back to Tutuala. While the island is nice it not any different from many thousands of islands around A...

A little video of my trip over to Jaco Island in Timor-Leste, or Easttimor as some know it by this April. It's one of the world's least visited countries with only 60.000 international visitors a year. Surprising since it's safe, absoutely stunning and visa free for many countries. Sorry about the windy noice on the beach - I still haven't found a suitable microphone of muff for my camera. Top best places to visit in Dili, East Timor Dili lies on the northern coast of Timor Island, the easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Dili is the largest city, chief port and commercial center of East Timor and also is the newest Asian capital. Although there are not many tourist attractions in town but there are some interesting buildings like: The Government Palace, The Presidential Palace, And the headquarter of the Ministry of Defense. The most characteristic landmark is the Statue of Jesus that is constructed on a headland to the east of town. The statue is about 27m tall and stands on a globe of earth and the view from across the bay is spectacular. Of similar type but less famous is the Statue of John Paul II, located on the western side of the city. Among the few places...

Sandalwood trees are evergreen
Cut them down
Plant coffee beans
Build no schools
Construct no roads
Mark them as fools
Let ignorance rule
Leave them stranded on their island
Treat them to the tune of silence
Red is the cross that covers out shame
Every Kingdom, every land
Has it's heart in the common man
Silently the tide shifts the sand
Bury my heart on East-Timor
In coral sands
On golden shores
Buried are those
Who lived their lives
No place to hide for
Father and child
Leave them stranded on their island
Treat them to the tune of silence
We shake the hands that kill and forgive
Every Kingdom, every land
Has its heart in the common man
Silently the tide shifts the sand
Bury my heart on East-Timor
On barren graves
Where flowers won't grow
Blooms our Red cross lovingly
This nightingale deed
So we can be free
Stranded on their island
This army of the silent
We toast our own goodwill and forget
Every kingdom, every land
Has its heart in the common man
